Weather

It is essential that you know what weather you can expect in the region where you are going to hike. The following phone numbers and Internet sites will help you.

As a general rule, I would qualify the weather in the Alps as stable in Autumn (September-October) but as sultry and stormy in the Summer (June-July).

By phone:

For reliable local weather forecast, there is a special phone number: 0900-573067 followed by the location's suffix. Language is french. Use the number 0900-573068 for german and 0900-573069 for italian. As far as I know, there is no english version.

The suffixes are listed on page 159 of the Teletext TV program. Page is in french on the swiss-french channel (TSR), in german on the swiss-german (DRS) and in italian on the swiss-italian (TSI). When calling, you'll get the following info for the current day and the 5 next days: estimated amount of sunshine, wind, wind direction, min. temperature, max. temperature. Sometimes probability of rain in percent.

On the hikes descriptions, I've indicated the number to call for local weather forecast. But for your convenience, I've reproduced below the whole list as seen on the Teletext TV channel:

Local weather forecasts can be obtained on the Edicom website.
You have to enter a town's or village's name, e.g. Zinal, Arolla, Susten, Grindelwald, Champéry, Broc are OK. Other names will not work (Mauvoisin, Jungfraujoch, ...)
